The Inside out hammer by Tropic_meltdown is a standout functional glass piece that blends clean hammer styling with layered color and depth. At first glance it has a bright, airy look, but up close the work reveals an intricate inside out fume montage built from thick gold and silver spiraled tubing and flowing rainbow squiggle prep work. The result is a full spectrum finish that shifts beautifully through soft greens, yellows, blues and lavenders.
The body has a solid hammer-style profile with a broad bowl section and a long comfortable handle that gives the piece a balanced feel in the hand. Its construction looks substantial and sturdy, making it a reliable daily piece while still carrying the visual complexity of a more collectible work. The chamber is sized well for practical use, and the artist notes that it can easily hold enough to be passed around.
One of the most eye-catching details is the vivid purple silver firework implosion, which adds a bold focal point near the bowl. That implosion brings a burst of magenta, violet and blue against the softer fumed body, creating a strong contrast that gives the pipe even more personality. Combined with the inside out linework, it gives the piece a lively, almost glowing appearance in strong light.
Like many high quality fumed glass pieces, this hammer is designed to color in beautifully over time, developing even more richness with regular use. That makes it appealing both as a functional hand pipe and as a piece that evolves visually the more it is enjoyed. Handmade by Tropic_meltdown, the Inside out hammer is a solid, full spectrum piece with strong character, practical size and standout heady detail.

I fell in love with glass in the 90βs, seeing the gold and silver fumed hand pipes in the counterculture. Β As much as i wanted to blow glass then, it wasn't time. Β I didnβt get to try my hand at flame working until life threw me a curveball with chronic autoimmune issues that stopped me in my tracks. Β My pain management issues led me back to cannabis and glass now in my 40βs. My wife and I realized that this was something i could pursue as my health sees fit and we set out on this path to build the studio!Β
My fascination with borosilicate flame working was fueled by the color spectrums and optics possible with the masterful application of gold and silver on clear glass. Β I have been striving and learning to make the most vivid beautiful work I can! I make whatever I'm inspired to at this point and there is always something new in the works!
Glass has felt like the culmination of every single interest/skill Β I've had over my 45 years of living. Β Im an artist and mechanic at heart and truly believe I've found my calling with this medium.
Favorites techniques: deep striking silver implosions, inside out gold and silver, retticello, fumacello, but mostly i just enjoy getting a big blob of glass ripping hot and making magic Β happen! I was born for this!!
